Meta Will Use Public Data From Adults In The Uk For Artificial Intelligence Training

Meta will start using publicly shared content from adult users in the UK on Facebook and Instagram to train its artificial intelligence models. The company will assess publicly available information, such as posts, comments, photos, and descriptions, from users on both platforms.

Meta emphasized that its AI is designed to reflect diverse global communities and plans to expand its AI initiatives to more countries and languages later this year. The company clarified that it does not use data from accounts of individuals under 18 in the UK.

In July, Meta halted AI assistant deployments in the EU following an order from the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) due to data privacy concerns. Meta claims it uses Facebook and Instagram user data with their consent and offers an option to opt out.

UK-based adults on Facebook and Instagram will receive in-app notifications detailing Meta's data usage practices and offering an option to object to the use of their data for AI training. Meta stated that it will accept all existing and new objection forms.

The DPC, responsible for enforcing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is intensifying its oversight. On September 12, it launched a cross-border investigation into Google Ireland Limited to determine if it complies with EU data protection laws in developing its AI models.

The investigation will focus on the use of EU citizens' personal data in training Google’s advanced language model, Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM2), introduced on May 10, 2023.

The DPC also investigated the social media platform X and concluded the investigation after X agreed to meet the necessary compliance standards. On September 4, X agreed to stop using personal data of EU and European Economic Area (EEA) users to train its AI chatbot, Grok.

Phantom, Solana’s most widely used wallet provider, has drawn criticism from some users for charging fees on in-app token swaps.

While some disgruntled community members attacked Phantom, voices across the Solana ecosystem came to the wallet’s defence. Reigniting debate around business models in the Web3 world, Phantom’s supporters argue that the platform has a right to generate revenue.

In an industry where meme coin presales can raise over $40M , is it fair to attack businesses providing essential services for charging easily avoidable fees?

SOLANA COMMUNITY MEMBERS COMPLAIN ABOUT 0.85% SWAP FEE
Frustrated Solana users have taken to 𝕏 to air their grievances about Phantom’s in-app swap fees. The public outrage came following circulation of data suggesting that the wallet provider generated over $30M in revenue through token swaps.

Comparisons between quotes between wallets and DEX aggregator Jupiter only added further fuel to the fire. Perhaps spurred on by stagnant market conditions, commentators on social media remarked that discrepancies between swaps provided by Phantom and Jupiter were “actually ridiculous.”

Eagle-eyed users remarked that the data wasn’t wholly accurate. Galactic Geckos founder Genuine Articles highlighted that the $30M figure was lower than expected, before Fabiano.sol, the influencer who originally shared the data, acknowledged that Phantom would’ve generated over $10M through in-app token swaps in 2021 alone.

While it’s obvious that traders can access better rates by using platforms like Jupiter directly, can Wallet providers be blamed for charging fees on value-added services?

Is the Slander Against Phantom Justified?
Content creator and former Phantom team member Seb Montgomery countered the attacks levied against Phantom. Arguing that every business has operational costs that need paid, Montgomery asserted that “Dapps, apps, wallets, etc. need revenue or they close up shop, and head home.”

Hammering his points home, Montgomery reminded Solana users of their double standards. The content creator highlighted how network participants were willing to provide over $40M to the $WATER memecoin presale, but criticized an 0.8% fee on services offered by one of Solana’s longest-standing products.

“You have probably lost $1000s on the pure rubbish. So don't be a clown and not support the wallets that make it all possible.” - Seb Montgomery

Montgomery also acknowledged that Solana owes much of its success to Phantom. Paying homage to Phantom’s position as Solana’s most widely used wallet, Montgomery asserted “Without Phantom, Solana's success would not have been anywhere near where it got to.”

WHICH WALLET GIVES THE BEST VALUE ON SWAPS?
While traders and users looking for the best rates should always go directly to decentralized exchanges or aggregators, it’s also worth knowing the various in-app swap rates of different wallets.

Fuse Wallet - 0%

Solflare - 0.8%

Phantom - 0.85%

Backpack - 0.85%

It should also be noted that all Solana wallets route their trades through Jupiter. Solana’s leading DEX aggregator typically offers the best rates on trades and allows third-party apps to add fees onto swaps.

Despite some traders expressing frustration, Phantom and other wallet providers have always been transparent and forthcoming about in-app swap fees. Using wallet-based swaps is completely optional and easily bypassed. Trader’s complaints are hardly unresolved.

Marinade Finance, one of Solana’s original staking providers, has found itself in hot water with validator operators.

Validators argue that Marinade’s new Stake Auction Marketplace (SAM) harms the staking landscape, allowing malicious actors to thrive at the expense of honest validators.

Beyond losing stake in the network, chagrined validators suggest that, left unchecked, the SAM model is a threat to decentralization and Solana’s scalability moving forward.

Marinade has dismissed these accusations. Countering claims of apathetic negligence, Marinade argues those who criticize the new system do so out of spite.

Is this a case of willful blindness, or are validators looking for a scapegoat to blame for their own shortcomings?

WHY ARE VALIDATORS UPSET?
Once heralded as a powerful new model that would push staking APY to new heights, the SAM has drawn scorn and skepticism from certain validators. Marinade’s SAM enables validators to bid on network stake, with winners securing stake and passing on elevated rewards to delegators.

To win auctions, validators competitively bid on network stake. However, surging demand for stake has driven validators to bid at potentially unsustainable levels. In previous epochs, winning validators needed to yield over 10% APY to win auctions, a rate considered impossible to achieve through native staking alone.

This has led certain operators to speculate on how these validators can afford such high bids. Suggesting that such yield can only be achieved through malicious activities, like sandwich attacks, private mempools, and off-chain deals, some validators argue that Marinade is turning a blind eye to dishonest validators.

Distressed validators have created analytics dashboards to express their frustrations and support their claims. Hanabi’s ‘Marinade Stake Selling’ dashboard highlights that a number of validators flagged for malicious activity have won stake through the SAM.

Responding to accusations levied by third-party dashboard creators, Marinade CEO Michael Repetny argues “Hanabi lacks any methodology, they only copy labels from other Stakewiz dashboard to call it a day.”

Adding further context to the claims of disgruntled operators, Repetny affirms “Hanabi lost 1M SOL from Marinade so it’s understandable he fights the new system.”

Concerned validators have taken to Marinade’s Discord server to air their grievances. Operators have claimed that, through the SAM, over 2.7M SOL has been staked to questionable validators, including sybils and sandwiches. Disgruntled operators even suggested “Marinade wants you to have side deals, ethical or not.”

Additionally, validators have argued that if “most of the mSOL pool is delegated to unethical validators it’s a really bad look for the Solana ecosystem.”

In an exclusive statement with SolanaFloor, Max Kaplan, Head of Engineering at Edgevana, credits Marinade for trying something inventive that “had never been done before”.

However, Kaplan admits that Marinade “went full capitalist… basically, the highest bidder wins. Marinade doesn’t really care if a validator bids for stake and is just gonna lose money on that stake, that’s not their problem… They’re happy to take the money and give that to mSOL holders.”

Experts argue that in current conditions, staking yield over 10% simply isn’t sustainable. Kaplan contends “10% APY is higher than the native staking yield that is paid out on chain. The money has to come from somewhere.”

Without making any accusations, Kaplan theorizes that additional yield could potentially come from a validator’s own “marketing/growth budget” or other sources like “SWQoS / private mempool deals”.

Responding to any accusations, Repetny reinforces Marinade's stance that “SAM provides the best yield on the market for delegators. It is not an active policy maker or opinionated strategy to tweak the network.”

Crypto Community Smug About Global IT Outage, But Does Blockchain Actually Fix This?
A software bug invoked international hysteria when a bug in a Windows content update shut down banks, airlines, and emergency services.

Showcasing the world’s reliance on centralized systems, a global IT outage brought the world to its knees. Across the planet, major service providers like banks, supermarkets, and logistics companies found themselves unable to operate, causing significant disruption.

Eager to prove its relevance, the crypto community was quick to launch a tirade of smug comments. “Crypto fixes this” was heard across social media platforms, with crypto advocates championing blockchain as an obvious solution to singular points of failure.

But is that truly the case? While decentralization aims to eliminate centralized points of failure, would blockchain solutions actually have prevented this widespread technical meltdown?

What Happened?
The chaos began when CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity provider, pushed a defective single content update to Windows hosts. The bug affected millions of Microsoft Windows devices all over the world, causing infinite reboot loops and leaving users staring at Windows’ infamous BSoD (Blue Screen of Death).

Attempting to bring clarity to the situation CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz, released a statement on 𝕏. Assuring affected users that “this is not a security incident or cyberhack”, the CEO claims that “the issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed”.

While Kurtz has indicated that a fix has been deployed, Windows users globally report still being unable to access their devices.

Fortunately, savvy developers were on hand to remedy the situation and provide timely solutions.

Affected users can reboot their Windows devices in Safe Mode and delete the defective update file, or wait until CrowdStrike implemented resolution is distributed.

CRWD stock

In traditional markets, CrowdStrike stock (CRWD) suffered a crippling blow, down 8.82% in today’s trading, based on NASDAQ data. While this might seem insignificant when compared to crypto’s volatility, price movements of this scale are uncommon in traditional markets.

Does Crypto Really Fix This?
The crypto community wasted no time calling out the flaws of centralized systems and singular points of failure. Citing mass outages like today’s as evidence that decentralized systems are the future of infrastructure, crypto advocates were quick to leverage the event as an example of “Bitcoin fixes this”.

However, not all pockets of the crypto community were in agreement. Several blockchain developers and engineers highlighted that in this specific example, pushing bugged code to production would likely have the same effect to blockchain networks.

Despite the specifics and technicalities, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the flaws in centralized services and singular points of failure. Commentators remarked that society’s reliance on centralized companies and infrastructure providers doesn’t bode well for our future.

This belief reinforces the viability of DePin technology, which aims to distribute services across a variety of independent providers and establish more secure and reliable infrastructure. Frank Mathis, founder of GenesysGo, highlights the importance of conducting rigorous security checks before pushing software updates.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology may not have been a direct solution to this particular problem. However, global outages like the CrowdStrike defect help to promote discussion around the benefits of decentralization and distributed systems.

The Legacy of Zuzalu: One Year Later 🌇

Can the ephemeral city experiment inspired by Vitalik live on?

One year ago this week, our very own
TrustlessState shared details about his experience living with some of crypto’s brightest minds in the ephemeral city called Zuzalu.

You can read David's full breakdown of his experience below:

This popup city housed over 200 people from diverse regions and fields for two months. David conducted a number of interviews with fellow attendees during this time on topics spanning zero-knowledge proofs, longevity and biotech, network states, and public goods. You can check out those conversations below.

Inspired and initiated by VitalikButerin, Zuzalu blended structure and spontaneity to construct a successful experiment, but almost immediately after the ephemeral city dispersed, attendees wondered how they could keep the fire of Zuzalu alive and continue to offer places for the ethos of Ethereum to connect with disparate emerging technologies.

Let’s take a look at what they’ve been up to since 👇

🏡 The Rise of Zu-Villages
The success of Zuzalu sparked interest in continuing the concept of crypto pop-up cities called Zu-villages.

Earlier this year, a gitcoin grants program offered 250 ETH in funding for creating Zu-villages and Zu-related technology. The round ran from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15, providing funding for 32 events like JoinEdgeCity, Esmerelda and ZuBerlinCity, which are currently running or have just finished, and 28 tools like ZupassProject and MuseMatrix_, a DeSci research institute.

Many of these tie into Zuzalu City, a community hub for Zu-villages and related software, including a calendar of pop-up cities like the few we've highlighted below:

Edge Esmeralda

The ongoing Edge Esmeralda is a month-long popup village focused on incubating novel technologies and new ways of living, aiming to build a foundation for a permanent new town, Esmeralda, around Healdsburg, CA. With $217K in funding from the Zuzalu grants round, Esmeralda put together a series of events centered around human organization, robotics, artificial intelligence, real-world crypto applications, and health and longevity.

The rise of Zu-villages illustrates the enduring impact of Zuzalu, with these pop-up cities continuing to foster collaboration, technological advancement, and a decentralized way of living across the globe.

These pop-up villages demonstrate a model where individuals can co-live, co-work, and co-create, blurring the lines between professional collaboration and communal living to create atmospheres aligned with personal sovereignty and collective problem-solving. The transient nature of these communities allows for flexibility and adaptability, where new ideas can be tested and refined in real time.

It highlights a future where governance is more fluid, technology enhances participants' health, and community building is a continuous, evolving process.

By providing spaces for like-minded individuals to come together, Zuzalu and its successors create fertile ground for social experimentation and technological innovation. They embody the spirit of decentralized, autonomous living, further reflecting the broader societal trends towards alternative lifestyles in the digital age. Overall, the legacy of Zuzalu lies in its ability to inspire and enact a vision of a forward-thinking world, where dynamic, transient communities can thrive and innovate, and tech and health exist in harmony.

Crypto in 2024: Mid-Year Reflections

4 takeaways 👇

Crypto moves fast – like blink-and-you-missed-it fast.

The first half of this year has been no different, with new chains and applications emerging daily and the crypto industry gaining mainstream acceptance in the financial world.

Amid the Twitter echo chambers and the frenzy of bull market price action, it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. So, let's zoom out and focus on the signal amid the noise.

TL;DR Crypto is just getting started; don't get shaken out.

Today, we’ll take a step back to reflect on the key developments of H1 2024, exploring the significant events and trends that highlight the progress we've made this year. 👇

1️⃣ Crypto is now mainstream
Remember the days when crypto was a niche plaything for cypherpunks? Those days are well over.

In the first half of 2024, crypto broke through to the mainstream with a vengeance.

The turning point was the long-awaited approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January. Suddenly, Wall Street had a comfortable on-ramp to crypto, and they took it in a big way. Eleven ETFs launched in one day, and volumes broke records.

And it didn’t stop at Bitcoin. The SEC finally greenlit eight spot ETH ETFs in May, further validating the entire crypto ecosystem, and opening the door for even broader institutional adoption.

2️⃣ Crypto Adoption Accelerating
Crypto adoption is accelerating at a remarkable pace. The number of active users across blockchains is up big time, hitting an all-time high of 42.92 million active addresses in April.

Another factor is the resurgence of DeFi. DeFi activity and mindshare are on the rise again, signaling a renewed interest and activity onchain, one that's moving beyond simple speculation to perhaps some real-world utility, like in the form of stablecoins for payments and asset tokenization for RWAs such as government securities.

The momentum is clear: more people are coming onchain, and they're finding more reasons to stay.

3️⃣ Ethereum Still Dominant, But Solana Rising
Ethereum remains the dominant force in crypto. Over 60% of the total value locked in DeFi sits on Ethereum, a testament to the lindy ecosystem, which acts as a foundation for countless applications and chains.

This dominance is not just a matter of capital but also technological progress on the roadmap. Ethereum is scaling through L2s like Base who have seen robust adoption this year, and thanks to the most recent Dencun upgrade, offer users significantly lowered gas fees.

Moreover, Solana’s innovation engine is running hot. Tech advancements like zk-compression and user-friendly features like Blinks are setting the stage for broader adoption, and we can see that Solana’s network effects are taking root in real time.

Make no mistake: Ethereum isn't going anywhere. Its established network effects and vast developer community ensure its continued importance in crypto. But Solana's impressive strides can't be ignored. Both ecosystems are thriving, each in its unique way. This parallel adoption is a win for crypto users, as it accelerates innovations and drives the entire industry forward.

4️⃣ More Chop Ahead, Then Up-Only
Bitcoin broke its all-time high in March, briefly breaching the $70 ,000 mark. While that party seemed to end pretty abruptly, let's not get carried away. This bull market is far from over.

The long-awaited ETH ETFs are nearly here, interest rate cuts are likely on the way, and crypto will likely continue to earn a place on the national stage during the U.S. elections with potential positive policy shifts in play.

💭 Closing Thoughts
So, has the first half of 2024 been all smooth sailing for crypto? Not quite.

The bull market must go

One significant proposal could help mature the Bitcoin L2 landscape: the reintroduction of OP_CAT. This opcode, which was disabled early in Bitcoin's history, could unlock new capabilities and pave the way for more sophisticated and trustless Bitcoin L2 solutions.

Let's dig into why this opcode could be so transformative for BTC 👇

What is OP_CAT?
Okay, so why is this seemingly random opcode so controversial? OP_CAT, or "Operation Concatenate" is an opcode in Bitcoin's scripting language that allows for the concatenation of two data elements.

Initially proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto, OP_CAT was disabled in 2010 due to security concerns related to its original implementation, specifically potential denial-of-service (DoS) attacks caused by unbounded memory usage.

The introduction of the Taproot upgrade in 2021 has mitigated these original concerns. Taproot enforces a maximum stack element size of 520 bytes, addressing the memory usage issue that led to OP_CAT's deactivation. With this security improvement and resurgent Bitcoin development interest, thanks to Ordinals and Runes, a movement to reintroduce OP_CAT to enhance Bitcoin's scripting capabilities is gaining steam, aiming to put more complex transaction capabilities in reach.

Are Covenants and Smart Contracts Different?
One reason why OP_CAT is so compelling is because it can actualize covenants, i.e. spending conditions, on Bitcoin. Covenants and smart contracts are both mechanisms for controlling the flow of funds in a blockchain network, but they operate in distinct ways.

Covenants:
Purpose: Restrict how funds can be spent in future transactions.
Functionality: Implement specific spending constraints, such as limiting addresses or setting conditions on fund transfers.
Complexity: Generally involves simpler, deterministic logic without loops or complex computations.
Implementation: Can be implemented using Bitcoin Script with enhancements like OP_CAT.

Smart Contracts:
Purpose: Automate a wide range of processes and transactions.
Functionality: Handle complex tasks such as decentralized exchanges, token issuance, and multi-party agreements.
Complexity: Support complex conditional logic, including loops and intricate computations.
Implementation: Commonly implemented on platforms like Ethereum using high-level programming languages.

Why Does OP_CAT Matter for Bitcoin L2s?
OP_CAT would prove crucial for advancing Bitcoin L2 solutions because it enhances the scripting capabilities needed for more complex and trustless Bitcoin infra. First, OP_CAT allows for covenants, enabling the construction of more complex scripts. This is essential for creating advanced transaction conditions and functionalities required for L2 solutions.

Additionally, if OP_CAT is activated, projects like StarkWareLtdare on standby to develop atop it. StarkWare has plans to leverage OP_CAT for bringing zero-knowledge (ZK) scaling to #Bitcoin to enable advanced financial instruments and apps on the network. StarkWare’s involvement here underscores the broader ecosystem's readiness to capitalize on the enhanced capabilities that OP_CAT would introduce.

As such, as the community continues to explore and test the possibilities around this proposal, the future of Bitcoin L2s looks promising and ripe with potential. At this point, reactivating OP_CAT seems like a matter of when not if!
