Institutions jumped into crypto more headlong than ever in 2024. Their moves are starting to bridge the gap between TradFi and DeFi. However, this article isn’t focused on why firms are building onchain. Instead, we are focusing on where these funds are choosing to build.

What’s Happening on Ethereum?
Ethereum is the world’s largest smart-contract blockchain network. It has secured over $90 billion in RWAs, including stablecoins. 2024 has been a big year for the adoption of non-stablecoin RWAs on Ethereum as well, with the network growing its onchain U.S. treasuries, bonds, and cash equivalents from $800 million to over $1 .5 billion and overall non-stablecoin RWA value to $2 .9 billion.

Some of the major players building on Ethereum this year include
Visa, BlackRock and FTI_US

Earlier this month, Visa announced that they are building the Visa Tokenized Asset Platform (VTAP) on Ethereum. This is the company’s biggest step toward crypto adoption thus far. VTAP enables Visa to issue and manage fiat-backed tokens on Ethereum. It is intended to be a sandbox for participating financial institutional partners to create and experiment with fiat-backed tokens. They expect to begin piloting the platform with Spanish multinational bank BBVA in 2025. While the VTAP program is certainly an experiment, it gives credit to the thesis that TradFi will migrate its operations onto Ethereum over the coming decades.

Yet, the success of Ethereum’s competitors highlights a critical point: institutions are no longer bound to a single network. While Ethereum is foundational, blockchains like Solana and Stellar provide alternatives that are increasingly hard to ignore. However, they also present novel interoperability concerns.

Interoperability is central to the future of institutional blockchain adoption. As Visa states in their VTAP press release announcement, the largest benefits of building onchain include easy integration, programmability, and interoperability. Institutions that venture onto non-EVM chains like Solana or Stellar may face challenges in asset liquidity and protocol compatibility. This can lead to reliance on third-party services to bridge assets between chains, which introduces complexity and security risks. Ethereum’s widespread use means that staying within the EVM ecosystem—whether through Ethereum or Layer 2 solutions—remains the simplest and most secure option for institutions.

However, for Ethereum to maintain its lead in the race toward institutional adoption, it must continue to balance world-class security and stability with the performance and scalability that competing chains continue to push. The race to capture the attention of institutional finance will be won by the network that can not only meet today’s demands but also anticipate the needs of tomorrow. After causing significant congestion issues across the Solana network in April, the ORE mining protocol returns to “revive the long lost dream of crypto as p2p electronic cash.”

Love it or hate it, Proof-of-Work crypto mining is returning to Solana. ORE, the wildly popular mining protocol that besieged the Solana blockchain in April is returning, promising a revised and more egalitarian approach to distribution.

With ORE price climbing over 100% in anticipation of the relaunch, the question needs to be asked: What will be different this time around?

ORE v2: WHAT'S DIFFERENT?
Pseudonymous founder HardHatChad launched ORE as an experimental Solana hackathon project in April 2024. Leveraging a Proof-of-Work mining concept on a high throughput Proof-of-Stake blockchain, HardHatChad aimed to create a truly fair token launch.

In a matter of days, the Ore protocol objectively became the most used program in the Solana ecosystem at the time, generating over 12M transactions between 124k+ users.

However, due to flaws within the project’s model and network congestion issues caused by the ORE mining, HardHatChad opted to pause mining to focus on redevelopment. Despite the chaos, OreSupply took home the grand prize at the Solana Renaissance Hackathon.

After months of development work behind the scenes, HardHatChad has teased the relaunch of ORE v2. Courtesy of several key changes, the passionate founder renews his mission to “revive the long lost dream of crypto as p2p electronic cash.”

HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT:
• No Admin Variables - The revised protocol will rely on open-source algorithms to manage all program variables, such as mining difficulty.

• Mining Multipliers - Staking ORE tokens gives miners a rewards multiplier of up to 100%, based on their proportional stake. This only applies to miners submitting valid hashes and cannot be abused through flash-loans.

• Fixed supply - Like Bitcoin, ORE has a fixed maximum supply of 21M. One ORE will be issued per minute, projecting a fully emitted supply by 2064.

• Sybil Protection - In the relaunched protocol, miners will maximize rewards by submitting the most difficult hash possible. This is expected to discourage sybil miners and mitigate network congestion.

• Accessible Hash Function - A new hash function closes the performance gap between high-end hardware and consumer devices, lowering ORE mining’s barrier to entry.

• Client Software - OreSupply has revamped its software to improve performance and reliability. HardHatChad also promised to launch client software that will be compatible with the Solana Saga mobile device.

• Immutable Contract - Once mining dynamics have stabilized, the OreSupply contract will be permanently frozen, meaning that no further changes can be implemented to its code.

The OreSupply team hopes that by implementing these changes, the protocol will be better suited to wider adoption within the Solana ecosystem.

July 19th’s devastating IT outage left hundreds of businesses across the world scrambling to provide basic services. A software bug that was prematurely pushed to production wrought havoc across the globe, temporarily shutting down banks, airlines, and essential services.

Cryptocurrency may not have been a solution to this particular problem, but the event still exposed the vulnerabilities and flaws of our reliance on centralized infrastructure.

What makes DePINs more resilient than centralized alternatives and why is Solana so well-equipped to support decentralized infrastructure?

SECURITY THROUGH DECENTRALIZATION
One of the fundamental staples of the cryptocurrency industry, decentralization is key to avoiding singular points of failure. Drawing resources and infrastructure from distributed sources makes any entity vastly more robust.

Despite detractors arguing that the network is dangerously centralized, Solana has proven its critics wrong, establishing itself as one of the industry’s most decentralized blockchains. A common and admittedly simplified measure of network decentralization, Solana boasts a Nakamoto Coefficient that surpasses the bulk of its rivals.

However, where Solana gains its edge is through the development of alternative validator clients. Barring Ethereum, most Layer One blockchains rely on one sole validator client. Ironically, if a software bug was pushed to production, as was the case with the CrowdStrike outage, these blockchains could also fall victim to a complete network outage.

On the other hand, Solana is on track to eliminate this vulnerability. The network currently hosts two independent validator clients. Solana’s network resilience will go to new heights with the deployment of Jump Crypto’s Firedancer client, which completely rewrites the network into a different programming language from scratch, eliminating the risk of one bug affecting various clients.

Not only is Solana becoming more decentralized by the day, but the network’s thriving DePIN sector is witnessing unrivaled adoption.

SOLANA LEADS REAL WORLD DePIN ADOPTION
Crypto’s DePIN sector is vague. Despite deploying zero infrastructure and offering no proof-of-concept, hundreds of different projects are categorized as DePIN protocols by various blockchain data sites.

For example, CoinMarketCap’s DePIN category features over 140 different DePIN projects but includes Layer 1 blockchains like Internet Computer (ICP). DePinScan, a research tool operated by IoTeX, lists 262 DePin cryptocurrency projects. Other resources, like EV3’s depin.ninja platform, suggests over 300 DePIN protocols are being built on Ethereum alone.

With such ambiguity surrounding what defines a DePIN network, how can we track the manner in which DePINs are actually being deployed and used?

Physical Infrastructure. Among hundreds of supposed DePIN projects, which protocols can individuals see first-hand through real-world devices or Proof-of-Concept?

According to EV3, Solana-based projects dominate their competitors in terms of active node deployments, with projects like Helium, Hivemapper, and Natix each operating hundreds of thousands of devices.
